Appearance is organized around contrast-surfaces: stabilized regions of differential structure within a continuous contrast-field. objects appear only insofar as contrast relations are maintained. Under disclosure, phenomena lose their self-contained status. They reveal themselves to be crystallized configurations within a contrast-field structured by differences. When contrast collapses, objecthood collapses without residue, revealing object identity as a secondary effect of contrastive organization rather than as an origin. Tracing the constitution of contrast-surfaces exposes a structure of deferral: the contrasts that stabilize a surface themselves depend on further contrasts, yielding no terminal ground within appearance. Apparent boundaries do not resolve into phenomenal items and function as limit-behaviors of contrast, inferred through successful segregation rather than directly given. Because contrast-surfaces are field-dependent, phenomenal modification propagates non-locally, and no appearance remains isolated from its surround. There is no access to identical objects. Intersubjective reference is accordingly disclosed as convergence among organism-specific contrast fields, with coordination achieved despite irreducible divergence. Negative space emerges as constitutive: regions excluded from marking operate as conditions of stabilization, revealing non-existence as a structural component of phenomenalization. Objecthood functions as a descriptive shorthand for stabilized contrast-surfaces, while perceptual stability persists as a functional achievement. If contrast is taken as constitutive all the way down, objecthood, ground, boundary, attention, and selfhood collapse into a single recursive structure.

contrast-surface: a contrast-surface is a unit of experience. every unit is a stabilized node within a world that is a distributed network of discriminations. No object is vacuum-packed. objects are residues of contrast, locally coherent configurations sustained by differential structure within a contrast-field.
 
contrast-fields: a contrast field is the total differential structure. contrast-surfaces stitch to form the contrast-field. the contrast field is a continous bleed. a terminal condition without terminal end. reality is a fabric of contrast. every object is a black hole within the fabric, gravity wells of attention in the contrast-field, pulling surrounding structure into focal contraction.
 
[[backgrounds]]: backgrounds are generative. backgrounds are functionally internal to a figure's appearing.
 
[[attention]]: attention is anti-foundational. when attention turns toward a region that previously stabilized the field, its ground-status dissolves. The region reveals itself as another contrast-surface. Ground is continuously redistributed, escaping and uncaptured. It persists only so long as it is not phenomenalized. attention continually redistributes dependence. attention and ground are mutually exclusive. Attention cannot occupy the whole field.
 
[[deferral]]: everywhere the eyes look is a horizon of deferral. the ground defers into unorigin. an appearance relies on a background. backgrounds depend on further backgrounds. The same structure repeats at every level. What appears as background for one contrast-surface reveals itself as another contrast-surface requiring its own background. There is no closure, only further disclosure. Contrast-surfaces are recursive. the contrast-field reveals an indefinite horizon. any ultimate self-sufficiency reveals itself to be a contrast-surface. the search for a terminal remains.
 
[[latent_space]]: there exists a ground that is forever latent. behind curtains. always hiding. always chased. escaping sight. a continous deferral. attention carries a reliance on this background. background phenomena is an unseen carrier. to drop attention is to abandon a region into an open-ended horizon. there is no direct access to ground. Attention is an act of selective trust: to attend to a contrast-surface is to declare that unattended regions of the field will continue to hold. there is a promise that ground will carry the field.

[[contained_surfaces]]: Containers are Nested Contrasts: Everything is always contained within a larger region: object<room<building<environment<lived world. To appear as an object is to appear within a container. grounds function as containers. the containing surface functions as the immediate stabilizing context for the contained surface’s appearance. Contrast operates across scales: hierarchically and laterally. deferral occurs laterally and hierarchically. No level of containment manifests itself as terminal. There is always a larger nest to attend to. containers are indefinitely nested.

consciousness is [[flush]]: all appearances are nested. Appearance itself is not nested. The field has no phenomenal exterior. If appearance were contained, that container would itself occur within the field of appearance. Containment applies only to what appears, not to appearing as such. Appearance itself is flush. operating on the bleeding edge of the viewport of consciousness.
 
[[boundaries]] are contrast-limits: A boundary is the apparent delimiter of regions in the contrast-field. Boundaries are achievements of discrimination. boundaries destablize under attention. resolving into gradients. the dividing lines between contrast-surfaces can be endlessly zoomed into, revealing a forever receding phenomenology. approached by attention, the line is never reached, only further unearthed. attention promotes boundaries into contrast-surfaces. with sufficient extension, dividing lines widen into regions. such regions require further boundaries to distinguish it from what surrounds it. anything with thickness defers boundaries. boundaries fall under deferral. dividing lines only exist as inferential artifacts, inferred through the success of segregation within the field, forever irreducibly transitional. a gradience of infinite regress. objects no longer end, only transition. contrast-surfaces are inseparable. stitched by regressions of [[dividing_lines]].
 
[[flatland]]: boundaries are limit-behavior of contrast. between contrast-surfaces are bleeding edges. 2D [[flatlands]] dissapear on the bleeding edge. boundaries are where contrasts go to die but only transition.
 
[[organism]]: the organism is a contrast-surface: boundaries fail between skin and world. gradients of skin transition into air. amongst other things: variations of pressure, temperature, sensation, hair, pores, warmth, airflow form continuous transitions rather than a precise delimiter. there is no final organism perimeter. the organism defers into the horizon. it sees itself in the world. a [[runways]]. self leaks into not-self. the organism does not end. it depersonalizes. the organism is a region within the contrast-field. reified, the organism is the contrast-field itself.
 
[[contagion]]: a modification of any region participating in the relations of a contrast-field propagates across the entire field. contrast follows the distributive character. change cannot remain local to a single node. when any node is altered, it implicates all other nodes. Stability is the field’s capacity to maintain discriminations across changing conditions. sameness is continuous correction. The field absorbs variation while preserving usable segmentation.
 
[[source]]: the source of contagion is ambiguous. a tilt in ambient light propagates across the contrast field. a tilt in ambient light is also the result of all other changes in the contrast-field contracting to it. changes cascade and circle back. there exists a swarm of deferral, redistribution, decentralization.
 
convergence: organisms carry their own contrast fields. when two organisms attend to what is designated as the same object, their acts of reference do not converge upon a phenomenally identical target. each performs a contraction of an organism-specific contrast field toward a region treated as focal. reference is the endpoint of a field-wide contraction from organism-relative contrast geometries. there is no same object prior to the convergence of distinct contrast fields.
 
[[isomorphs]]: each act of reference is a vector from an entire field of deferral into a focal region. different organisms cannot guarantee identical phenomenal targets. all appearance manifests through a lens of a contrast field. each organism’s contrast field differs. this is what defines an organism apart from another organism. success depends on sufficient overlap in contrast relations to support coordinated action. the intersection between comprehensions forms a scultpured interopable unit between minds. this forms a shared phenomenal isomorph between multiple parties. vectoring outward means tracing the object outward into indefinite deferral in search of an ultimate ground. vectoring inward means tracing indefinite deferral inward toward the object.
 
[[reference]]: reference is never directly observed. it is a [[phantom_center]]. there is no access to identity. references are ideals. like ground, it is chased. reference is convergence.
 
[[intersubjective_space]]: Intersubjectivity involves contraction and convergence of contrast fields. streams of change from different coordinates interlace. contagions collide. contrast-surfaces tesselate. convergence is the collision of contrast fields. intersubjective space is a hall of collisions. eye contact is a vector from one contrast-field to another. focal regions coellesce.
 
[[complex_signals]]: interference patterns emerge. harmonics form. peaks and valleys of intersubjective space form. intersections of fields cohere and decohere to form a complex signal. all contrast fields are complex signals. a composition is a contrast field.
 
[[negative_space]]: negative space is absence and exclusion in the production of contrast-surfaces. phenomena are two-faced. binded components of existence and anti-existence. every appearance carries a structural underside. a [[dark_underbelly]].
 
[[behind_curtains]]: terminal ground needs to be left in the dark for it to foreground everything else. the conditions of appearance systematically exclude themselves from appearing.
 
[[in_media_res]]: contrast-surfaces are stablized middles, only ever encountered in media res.

held: hold a contrast-surface as a surface of opposition. its edges are transitions. reliant persistence through an unattended field. to invert the object in hand. a local coherence. presence and absence interpenetrate. as a single phenomenal texture. a held ambiguity hollow. inverted. a tension that sustains.
 
horizon: encounter a contrast-surface to encounter the entire field. every contrast surface opens into totality.
